Dexter Scott King died on Monday, January 22, 2024, in California after a long battle with prostate cancer, his family confirmed in a statement. “He transitioned peacefully in his sleep at home with me in Malibu,” his wife, Leah Weber King, said in a statement.

Dexter King’s brother, Martin Luther King III, said he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of his sibling.

“The sudden shock is devastating,” he said in a statement. “It is hard to have the right words at a moment like this. Please keep the entire King family in your prayers, and in particular Dexter’s wife, Leah Weber”

His sister Rev Bernice King said words “cannot express the heart break” she felt from losing another sibling. Her sister, Yolanda King, died in 2007, a year after her mother.

The King Center said in a statement; “He was the family member delegated to take on the mantle of continuing the precedent his father set by legally protecting his work. He devoted his lift to the continued perpetuation of his father’s legacy and the protection of the intellectual property his father left behind”

Born in Atlanta in 1961, Dexter King was named after Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father served as a pastor for the first time.

He grew up in Atlanta and graduated from Fredrick Douglas High School. Dexter King then followed in his father’s footsteps and attended Morehouse College in Atlanta.

He later became a lawyer, a role which he used to help protect the King family’s intellectual property. He had a love for the arts and first moved to California to pursue acting, according to The King Center.

In 2002, he portrayed his father in the movie; “The Rosa Parks Story”. As an adult, he focused on shepherding his father’s legacy and protecting the King family’s intellectual property.

Dexter King was serving as the King Center’s chairman at the time of his death. In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, Reverend Al Sharpton wrote, “My condolences to all of Dexter’s family & friends. May he RIP, may his legacy live”

Vernon Jones, a former Georgia State House Republican, said: ‘My deepest sympathy to the King Family. I’m sadden by the passing today of Dexter King, Dr MLK’s youngest son. He was a friend!’

Civil rights leader Rev Al Sharpton said he sent his condolences to the family, adding “May he RIP, may his legacy live”.
